How does a brazed plate heat exchanger work?

The brazed plate heat exchanger is a package of corrugated channel plates joined together by vacuum-bronze welding at every point where they meet. This design creates two separate channels or circuits in the final product, customised for specific applications needs. Connections are mounted on the cover plates. Cover plates, blind rings, and cover plates are all included in the cover-plate packages.

The number and type of plates change depending on the size and pressure rating needed for your specific application. Some even come with blind rings that close off this space, making them easier to install than others where you need an extra piece or two included to complete the installation successfully!

They also come in sizes up to 80-90 per cent smaller than a traditional shell and tube heat exchanger arrangement, making them an attractive option among those who require compactness or space efficiency!

What are the disadvantages of brazed plate heat exchangers?

While plate heat exchangers have several benefits in comparison to other heat exchangers, there are also some drawbacks:

  • Leakage. Plate heat exchangers are made to allow plates and gaskets to be inserted between them. As Gaskets get older, gasket leaks become more likely. This is especially true when compared to shell and tube heat exchangers.
  • Higher pressure drops. Plate heat exchangers are limited because they have small passageways for fluid to flow, resulting in a high heat transfer. A higher pressure drop and a higher pumping cost are the consequence of this than shell and tube heat exchangers.
  • It isn’t as beneficial for vast fluid temperature differences. Flat plate heat exchangers perform less effectively than shell and tube exchangers in situations where there is a significant temperature difference between two fluids.
  • It doesn’t operate effectively at extremely high fluid temperatures. The gaskets among plate heat exchangers don’t work well with very high fluid temperatures.
